So last week. I meant to write a post, like every day.
Then it got hot. We’ve been in the 70-80′s all week weather-wise, and while I’m not complaining (finally some HEAT!), apartments in this city aren’t exactly equipped with the necessities (see: Air Conditioning) to deal with it. #firstworldproblems
And then…. excuses-
Like on Monday it was…. cooking a cauliflower pizza crust (+ 1 for the next day’s lunch).
Tuesday I ran 5 miles at the gym after work, and perhaps stopped by Banana to buy a necklace at 40% off.
Wednesday it was… oh right, tacos and Margaritas with one of my favorite people.
Thursday the PM run struck again followed by some intense Scandal watching. (MELLIE! So vindictive!)
Friday wrapped with me taking a power nap on the couch at 5pm.
And Saturday found me Pumpkin Pie Smoothie-ing (see: 80 degree temps IN THE FALL) before racing to my beloved Soul Cycle. (Jenny’s class – please come take it with me. The best $30 you will ever spend. And when it comes down to it – that’s like the cost of 2 glasses of Rombauer at Marengo.)
Sunday I was up at 8:30 for an almond milk latte and Justin’s Vanilla Almond Butter (aka CRACK), Raspberry preserves and a sliced banana “sandwich” on an Ezekiel Sprouted Grain wrap. Then it was out the door to take Pilates at 10, and teach Pilates at 11 and 12. In honor of all my Soul Cycling, I felt inspired and put together a Britney vs Justin playlist throughout the years. And then, while watching the 49ers game (probably the first full game I’ve ever “watched” in-between eating) and Homeland at our friend’s apt, got fro-yo delivered to us. Postmates you win.
Then this week showed up. Also known as MARATHON WEEK. To which I am not nervous in the slightest but if I’m living in reality, I’m probably incredibly undertrained. As in my last long run was…. like 5 weeks ago.
Here’s the thing though – I FEEL great. Pilates, yoga, Soul Cycle, twice-weekly runs and eating clean can apparently do wonders for oneself. Who knew? So all this FEELING great is distracting me from the haven’t-run-more-than-18-miles-pre-marathon thing.
You know what else makes one FEEL great? Obnoxious electric blue Run Inspires. Dead serious about pairing with an equally obnoxious neon yellow or pink top. That way if I collapse on the course, they’ll be able to find me. (Kidding – I hope.)
Pray that they wick sweat away instead of looking like something entirely unpleasant while running a marathon.
Yesterday I took a much-needed rest day. And got over my fear of raw tomatoes (it’s real) to roast them and make a homemade tomato sauce in my beloved Vitamix. (I roasted 8 roma tomatoes, a sliced onion, dried thyme, herbed rosemary salt and cracked pepper for 40 minutes @ 425* then literally threw everything in the Vitamix with some fresh basil, EVOO and some parmesan cheese. IT WAS INCREDIBLE.)
And I only washed my hands like 17 times to get all the tomato off.
Sauteed up a Field Roast Vegan Italian Sausage (is it even called a sausage if it’s vegan?) served it with quinoa pasta boyfriend found at WF (about 100x better than brown rice pasta) and topped with fresh basil & fresh parm.
Boyfriend had grilled chicken on his.
SO FREAKING GOOD.
I’m never buying jarred tomato sauce again. (I may buy gloves to assist in the tomato cutting/slimy inside scooping out though).
Soooo I haven’t really gone into it (much) but for the past couple weeks I’ve cut out (mostly) all meat (save for sashimi when it is being craved and organic turkey tacos on Sunday night because – well they looked delicious).
I really don’t know. I read way too much. Like way too much. I can tell you things about everything. (See: celebrity gossip). And then more. The more I read (and watched) about mass-produced meat and the agriculture industry, the more UGH I was to see what is potentially going into the meat I was eating – antibiotics, hormones, pesticides… and honestly I don’t want to know what else. This article was pretty interesting.
I’m aware that when purchasing meat from the farmer’s market this (hopefully) doesn’t occur. But it also makes me a little mehhhh to think about the treatment of animals pre-slaughter.
I’m hyper aware of my diet in all other aspects of it – reading labels meticulously, cutting way way back on gluten, eating local/organic/whole foods. And then Skinny Bitch scared me straight.
Boyfriend and I only buy organic, free-range poultry and organic grass-fed beef, farm-fresh eggs from the Farmer’s Market, and wild, local, sustainably caught fish. But hearing about how even the organic and free-roaming cows/chickens/pigs/etc are treated made me a little queasy. I’m obsessed with animals. All of them. (In particular dogs, cheetahs, wolves and marine mammals but that’s neither here nor there) so something wasn’t really adding up. I started feeling weird about eating meat.
So I decided to just try cutting out meat (again save for sashimi and/or fish) cold-turkey for a week.
I felt AMAZING.
Seriously WTF vegetarians?
Week 2 came and went – more energy, feeling great, and always full/satisfied after my meals.
Week 3 came to a close and I feet better than ever. I also really like knowing what I’m eating. At all times.
Week 4 begins… and I’m in no way craving meat.
And so, this will continue.
If I absolutely feel like eating meat? I absolutely will. But I haven’t missed it – at all. I’m obsessed with tempeh – I marinate it in a mixture of cumin, curry powder, cinnamon, smoked paprika, honey and tamari and then brown it on a skillet and crumble it into my lunchtime salads. I’ve made more quinoa dishes than I ever have in my life (and FYI – quinoa goes a LONG way – my butternut squash sage quinoa “risotto” lasted me a week). Tofu and I are acquaintances but not yet friends. Moving towards that though.
Well I think that about catches us up on last week and the beginning of this week.
Key take-aways: pilates, Soul Cycle, not running, Chicago Marathon in ~5 days, cutting out meat.
Oh also I went to Pilates this morning instead of running. Again. 26.2 on Sunday should be a breeze.
Have a great Tuesday!
